Switching Extension 8x16A

Overview

The SAE-816 is a high-current switching extension module for the Elausys Universal KNX Actuator System. Providing 8 relay outputs at 16A per channel, this extension is specifically designed for applications requiring higher current capacity than the standard 10A modules. Unlike the SAE-810, the SAE-816 channels operate independently, making it ideal for heavy-duty lighting circuits, high-power appliances, and industrial load control.

Technical Capabilities

The SAE-816 delivers 8 independent relay channels (A through H) rated at 16A/230VAC resistive load per channel. This higher current rating compared to the SAE-810 enables direct control of heavy loads including commercial lighting fixtures, water heaters, high-power appliances, and industrial equipment without external contactors.

Each relay output provides potential-free contacts with dual terminals per channel, allowing two separate loads to connect directly to the same output without terminal grouping.

The extension draws power internally from the MSA-810 master actuator through the side connector, requiring no separate power wiring. All channel configuration and KNX communication occurs through the master, with the SAE-816 channels accessible as additional communication objects within the single KNX physical address.

Installation & Configuration

The SAE-816 mounts on standard 35mm DIN rail occupying 4 space units (4SU/72mm width). Installation requires connecting the extension to the right side of the MSA-810 master actuator (or another extension module) using the provided side connector.

Wiring uses screw terminals accepting conductors up to 2.5mm2 cross-section with 0.5Nm tightening torque. Connect the phase from the circuit breaker to the input terminals and wire each load to the corresponding channel output terminal.

In ETS5 or ETS6, configure the SAE-816 channels through the MSA-810 application. The master automatically detects connected extensions during the one-button addressing sequence. Each channel supports standard switching functions including time delays, staircase lighting, shutter control, scene storage, and operation hour counters inherited from the master actuator capabilities.

Applications

Heavy-Duty Lighting: Commercial lighting installations with high-wattage fixtures, large LED arrays, or multiple luminaires per circuit exceeding 10A requirements.

High-Power Appliances: Direct control of water heaters, electric radiators, industrial fans, and equipment requiring 16A circuit capacity.

Compatibility & Integration

The SAE-816 requires the MSA-810 master actuator to operate and cannot function standalone. Up to 8 extension modules of any type can connect to a single master, enabling systems with up to 72 total channels through one KNX interface.

The SAE-816 channels do not count toward the 40-channel 10A limit that applies to MSA-810, SAE-810, and SAE-2410 combinations. This makes the SAE-816 ideal for expanding system capacity beyond the 10A channel limit while maintaining high current capability per output.
