RS232 communication interface for Paradox EVO alarm panels enabling KNX integration via the EVO-KNX gateway. Features 16 virtual inputs and 30 virtual PGMs for bidirectional home automation control using ASCII protocol. Required companion module for Paradox-KNX installations.
The Paradox PRT3 Printer Module is a versatile communication interface designed for Paradox EVO and Digiplex alarm control panels. While originally intended for report printing, its primary application in KNX installations is as the essential communication bridge between Paradox alarm systems and the Elausys EVO-KNX gateway, enabling full bidirectional integration of security and building automation.
The PRT3 provides RS232 serial communication supporting both ASCII and C-BUS protocols. For KNX integration with the EVO-KNX gateway, the module must be configured for ASCII protocol communication at 9600 baud. The interface features 16 virtual inputs that operate identically to physical zone inputs but respond to commands from external systems. These virtual inputs can trigger any alarm panel response including zone alarms, keyswitch functions, and automation sequences.
The module also includes 30 virtual PGMs (Programmable Outputs) that transmit alarm system events to connected home automation equipment. When security events occur within the Paradox system, such as arming, disarming, alarm activation, or zone status changes, the corresponding virtual PGM can send commands to the connected EVO-KNX gateway for translation onto the KNX bus.
A 2048-event buffer ensures no alarm events are lost during communication interruptions. The module supports partition assignment, allowing integration with multi-area security installations.
The PRT3 connects to the Paradox EVO control panel via the dedicated 4-wire serial bus. Power is supplied directly from the alarm panel. The RS232 connection to the EVO-KNX gateway uses a standard DB9 serial cable. Both parallel and serial printer ports are available for optional report printing functionality.
Configuration is performed using WinLoad software via USB connection to a PC. The module firmware is field-upgradeable using the CONV4USB converter and WinLoad. Key configuration steps include enabling ASCII protocol mode, setting communication parameters, and assigning virtual inputs and PGMs to the appropriate zones and events for KNX integration.
In residential KNX installations, the PRT3 enables seamless security-automation integration. Motion detectors from the Paradox system can trigger KNX lighting scenes, while KNX push-buttons can arm and disarm security areas. Virtual PGMs allow alarm events to automatically adjust climate control, close shutters, or activate presence simulation.
Commercial applications benefit from integrated access control and building management. Fire alarm zones can trigger emergency lighting and HVAC shutdown sequences through the KNX system. Area arming status can synchronize with lighting schedules and energy management routines.
The PRT3 is compatible with Paradox EVO and Digiplex series alarm control panels. For KNX integration, the module requires the Elausys EVO-KNX gateway, which translates ASCII protocol commands to KNX group objects. The EVO-KNX supports monitoring of up to 96 zones and 30 PGM outputs, with bidirectional control of 16 virtual inputs and 4 security areas.
The combined PRT3 and EVO-KNX solution integrates with any KNX TP installation and is configurable using ETS5 or ETS6. The unified Elausys alarm gateway architecture ensures consistent integration patterns with HyperVisu visualization servers and other KNX system components.
